Due to the large volume of emails that I receive, I’m sorry but I can’t answer every question individually – but keep the questions coming and I will answer as many as I can below.

Colin Rule, Basingstoke asks Congratulations on your finish in the Marathon Des Sables it is a great achievement and especially with your history of blisters. I am competing in 2011 and wanted to know what training preparation you did for the event and what
did you do to avoid the blisters?

James Says: Hi Colin, thanks for the message, as far as preparation I couldn't do as much running as I wanted in the last eight weeks due to a hip injury but prior to that I tried to fit as much training as possible around work and family. I was also training for two events (the World Duathlon Qualifiers and the MDS) so I was doing a fair bit of short hard interval and threshold running/cycling and then some long runs. I think the combination actually worked really well – I kept my speed and got the endurance. I'd generally do one or two long runs a week but a couple of times I ran three days of 20miles back to back. As for blisters I worked pretty hard on them surgical spirit to toughen them up, double layered socks and I also taped up the whole of the sole of my feet and escaped blister free. Good luck mate you'll love it.

John Robinson, Leeds asks I've just watched the whole ‘On Thin Ice’ series back to back and felt compelled to write to you to express my sincere congratulations to the whole team for doing what you did. I'm curious as to how your relationship with the guys is now and whether you remain friends?

James Says: Thanks for the question and for watching the show. Relationship all good with the other two - at least from my perspective. I think the TV was a harsh edit but we didn't want any control of what went in the show otherwise we'd have tried to make ourselves look like heroes which we definitely weren't. The three of us are due to do the Great North Run together then Ed and I head across to New York to do the Marathon at the beginning of November.

Anita Wells, North East Lincolnshire asks How are your frostbitten fingers? How long did it take your to recover from your race to the pole, which was brilliant to watch. Well done to you all.

James Says: Thanks for the mail, all recovered thanks. Luckily I didn't Get Ranulph Fiennes type frostbite. My big toes still don't feel quite the same but seem to work ok - they haven't regained all their feeling yet but apparently that will come with time. I seem to have a bit of heart rate suppression when exercising it but apart from that all good. Ben's nose also survived unscathed but to be honest he could have done with losing a bit.

Natalie Whyte, Bexleyheath, Kent asks If you were a contestant on 'Mastermind', what would be your specialised subject?

James Says: I recently got asked to go on Celebrity Mastermind, I said no for a couple of reasons, firstly the general knowledge round would get me and secondly I struggled to come up with a decent specialist subject. I've always been pretty good at dates and reckon learning a list rather than a literary work is the best way to go so I'd probably go down the history route!

Luke Coombs asks I have been watching your programme on TV and I have been amazed with your drive and determination but what are really want to know is how do you think of these challenges and when do you think you will stop.

James Says: Thanks for the question, one honest answer would be that doing long trips means putting off a real job. But in reality having done one sport exclusively for so long it's nice to challenge myself in a different way. Of course I could just have retired too early. Choosing the trip is hard as they are not adrenalin based - well not intentionally but ones where I'm/we're tested mentally and physically, get to travel somewhere and have to learn new skills. So if you've got any great ideas......
