Daily Mirror: James Cracknell on hand as ore arrives for medals
11/07/2011
The starting pistol was fired yesterday in the race to make the medals for the 2012 London Games.
Double Olympic rowing champion James Cracknell was on hand as mining firm Rio Tinto gave organisers the first lump of ore.
More than eight tonnes of gold, silver and copper will be extracted and refined for the medals.
James, 39, said: “Seeing the ore that will make the medals brings the Games a step closer for athletes.”
The metal will come from Rio Tinto mines in Mongolia and Utah.
