'I found out that I was pregnant with our third child about nine days after the accident...'

25/10/2012

Touching Distance is a harrowing account of the grueling recovery process that followed James' cycling accident in America in 2010. Telling both sides of their story, James and Bev explain the challenges that brain damage has brought to their relationship.

"We knew that he wasn't paralysed," describes Bev.

"We knew that he recognised me and he recognised his family, which was a really good sign - but he was by no means able to function independently."

  • James and Beverley, my most heart-felt best wishes to you for your ongoing recovery from your accident. Whilst not at James' level of ability I am also a competitive, amateur athlete in running, cycling and indoor rowing. Whilst training for the National Indoor Rowing Championships last January, at the age of 41, I suffered a Grand Mal seizure in front of my horrified wife which was diagnosed as a Grade 2 (non-malignant) brain tumour. I received 6 months chemotherapy treatment and am now on anti-seizure medication for the rest of my life. Following reading 'Touching Distance', I have been inspired to contact Headway Southampton to offer any volunteering help with their services that I can provide. I can't think of a more worthwhile cause. My very best wishes to you for the future.
    Cheers,

  • I suffered a TBI while cycling too. 8/11/2011 . Last training ride before my 2nd 70.3. It's been a long year, but with great friends and family it is all worth it. Can't wait to read your book! Hope to always learn...
